Under the general supervision of the Executive Director, the Comptroller is responsible for the financial management and controls of the ArtCenter. The Comptroller will demonstrate executive leadership skills in all areas of financial management and oversight.

General Schedule: This is a salaried full time position requiring 40 hours per week, regular schedule M-F 10am- 6pm.  Flexible schedule that might include evenings, weekends and holidays. 


The Comptroller is the responsible of all financial planning, record keeping, analysis and reporting activities. (S)he must establish and maintain processes and controls which validate the integrity of all systems and data, and provide a high level of internal and external controls. (S)he is a valuable member of the top management group.


  • Maintain a documented system of accounting policies, procedures and internal controls.
  • Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including making sure the organizational structure is adequate to achieving the department’s goals and objectives.


  • Ensure that all financial transactions are recorded in the general ledger accurately and timely.
  • Ensure that accounts payable are paid in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that accounts receivable are collected promptly.
  • Maintain the chart of accounts.
  • Maintain an orderly accounting record keeping system.
  • Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions.
  • Process payroll in a timely manner.
  • Reconcile payroll related reports such as wages, taxes and workers comp.
  • Prepare annual Workers Comp audit.
  • Prepare year end documents including 1099s.
  • Maintain vacation/sick days schedules for all employees.
  • Ensure that monthly bank reconciliations and account analyses are timely completed.
  • Ensure that any required debt payments are made on a timely basis.


  • Issue timely and complete financial statements.
  • Manage the production of the annual budget and forecasts.
  • Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management.
  • Provide financial analyses as needed, in particular for capital investments, pricing decisions, and present financial reports, other financial agreements, budgets and other advices to senior management and board of directors as needed.
  • Provide information to external auditors for the annual audit.
  • Monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants.
  • Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business administration.
  • 4+ years of accounting and payroll experience.
  • Proficient in QuickBooks, and Microsoft Office, including Excel and Word.
  • Previous management experience, with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and effective communication skills; experience in communication and presentation of key data sets to senior management.
  • Demonstrated excellence in managing finance, accounting, budgeting, expenses control, and reporting.
  • Highly organized with a strong attention to detail.
  • Solid business acumen, ability to learn quickly and interact across functional teams.
  • Ability to think strategically, to interact and work well with staff and management; to multi-task, to set priorities and organize work responsibilities to ensure completion of assigned tasks within preset timeframes.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with people of diverse cultures, education, social, and economic backgrounds, ability to give direction to staff and elicit buy-in on changes to policies and procedures and to work in a team centered environment.
  • Experience in nonprofit accounting preferred.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish is an advantage.
