Job Description:

Curatorial Internship at the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami

The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA Miami), is dedicated to promoting the work of contemporary artists, and to the exchange of art and ideas throughout the Miami region and internationally. Through an energetic calendar of exhibitions and programs, and its collections, ICA Miami provides an international platform for the work of established and emerging artists, and advances the public appreciation and understanding of the most innovative and experimental art of our time.

ICA Miami internships offer participants an opportunity to learn more about contemporary art and the scope of museum work during an exciting and critical moment of growth for the institution.  This internship is only open to graduate or post-graduate candidates.  Qualified candidates will participate in a 12-week program for a maximum of 15 hours per week.  Interns will receive a stipend of $500.00 for the internship.  The internship includes a parking pass during the tenure of the program.   ICA Miami internships may count towards academic credit, however, selected interns should review this process with their school and provide ICA Miami with the documentation needed for credit.  International and out-of-state candidates may apply, though, ICA Miami will not provide support for international visas, lodging or transportation.

Responsibilities

The Curatorial Department is offering a comprehensive research-based internship meant to strengthen interns writing skills and broaden their knowledge of contemporary art.  The internship will focus on two specific tasks listed below in order of priority.

Priority #1

Selected intern contributes to building scholarship on the museum’s permanent collection through their writing.  The most significant public collection in the region, ICA Miami’s permanent collection features works from the post-war period to contemporary, and is rapidly growing as the museum enters the next stage of its development.

Through writing a concise description of each work and its provenance that will be distributed on the museum’s website the intern will help to expand scholarship on the collection.

Priority #2

Selected intern contributes to compiling research and writing on selected artists for the group exhibition “The Everywhere Studio” inaugurating ICA Miami’s new museum building. The major group exhibition spans the post-war period to the present in order to explore how artists and their studios, and their relationship to media and labor, have influenced the way we work today. The exhibition will feature some 50 leading international artists over two full floors of the new museum building.

Through writing a concise description of each work and its provenance the intern will help to expand scholarship for the exhibition catalog.

This internship offers the opportunity to apply and improve critical writing through profound research. This includes research of: artists, their work and significance in the field of contemporary art; works of the exhibition; biography, major solo and group exhibitions, collections and seminal catalogues.

Participants will gain knowledge about major artists and art history.  Intern will work with ICA Miami’s Curatorial department on written pieces, Curators will offer editing experience to augment participants’ writing skills and profound knowledge of contemporary art.

Requirements:

  • Strong writing skills

  • Strong research skills

  • Profound knowledge of artists and institutions of the field of contemporary art

  • Undergraduate degree in art history or related fields

Interested candidates will need to include a one to two page writing sample that demonstrates your research and composition skills.

Timeframe/Deadlines

Completed applications with writing samples must be submitted no later than Tuesday, April 4, 2017.  Incomplete applications or submissions received after this date will not be accepted.  Selected interns will begin the program the week of May 15th and end the week of August 4th.  Specific days and time will be mutually agreed upon between the intern and museum department supervisor.
