Counselors will supervise children ages 6 through 13 years old, during the MOCA  Summer Art Camps. This is a temporary position from June 10th - August 16th 2024 with a mandatory inclusivity training on June 8th. Counselors are responsible for assisting MOCA Summer Camp Educators and actively participating in daily indoor & outdoor recreational activities. This position works under the direction of the MOCA Summer Camp Manager to provide well-organized and continuous supervision of campers during each 1-week camp session. We are seeking enthusiastic and energetic individuals to help the campers feel at home and in a safe space during the summer.
Major Areas of Responsibility
  • Assist MOCA Educators in supervising and ensuring a safe and healthy environment, both physically and mentally, during instructional time at MOCA’s Summer Art Camps.
  • Advocate and communicate with your campers to ensure a safe and healthy communication is established in the classroom.
  • Be responsible for the general safety, development, and achievement of the participants in their group; report concerns to leadership and document any issues.
  • Organize classroom materials and help prepare for instruction, snack breaks, lunch and games to ensure the camp is presentable and welcoming.
  • Manage children's behavior and act as a role model and mentor. Model constructive participation in all daily activities and field trips.
  • Ensure all children in assigned group are accounted for onsite, and on field trips; conduct headcount for groups when loading buses, upon trip arrival/departure and throughout the day.
  • Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas.  This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your campers' safety and their whereabouts at all times onsite, and on field trips.
  • Interact effectively and professionally with fellow employees, program participants, supervisors, staff, instructors and the general public.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance.
  • Know and understand ALL emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
  • Punctuality and regular attendance are essential functions of position.
  • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.
  • Prior experience working or volunteering with children ages 6 –13
  • Minimum Experience, at least one of the following;
    • one (1) season as summer camp volunteer 
    • one (1) season of paid experience with a summer camp, school or recreational program
    • one (1) year experience instructing children in a recreational setting, in any of the following areas: visual/fine arts, fashion design, or craftsmanship
  • Must be 16 years or older.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to enforce museum specific etiquette with students
  • Be able to work collaboratively and inclusively with all constituent groups of students, teachers, museum staff and visitors;
  • Ability to convey a professional appearance and attitude
 Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to exhibit the energy and physical stamina to work with children of varying ages.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision.
  • Ability to deal with stressful conditions in a calm and professional manner.
  • Skill to work with children of various ages by demonstrating patience, enthusiasm, and the ability to handle disruptive children effectively.
  • May be required to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. in various forms.
  • May be required to work outside for extended periods of time.
  • May be required to sit, stand, or maintain physical activity for extended periods of time.          
  • Bilingual in English, Spanish and/or Hatian Creole
 Reports to:
  • Summer Camp Manager
  • Seasonal employment; $12 an hour, not to exceed 35 hours a week for the duration of the contract with a minimum of 25 hours a week
  • All Summer Arts Camp Counselors must participate in a mandatory training on June 8th, 202420
  • This position requires a level II background check, which includes fingerprinting.
