The Department of Theater Arts in the College of Arts and Sciences has an exciting opportunity for an Scenic Carpenter to work in Coral Gables, FL.
Broad Scope and Function of the Job
The scenic carpenter position participates in the construction, load-in and strike of scenery for Department of Theatre Arts events, as well as the maintenance of Theatre Arts facilities and equipment under the guidance of the Technical Director.
This requires a working knowledge of typical scenic construction methods, carpentry, welding and rigging skills, as well as scenic painting and work in lighting and sound, and the ability to interpret construction drawings. The scenic carpenter will interact with, and in some circumstances train and guide student employees with a wide range of skillsets and training in the Jerry Herman Ring Theatre’s scene shop.
This work requires teamwork, cooperation and an emphasis on inclusion and safe shop practices.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Builds, installs and strikes scenery for Department of Theatre Arts productions and events as instructed by Technical Director.
- Performs maintenance tasks on Theatre Arts facilities and equipment as specified by the Technical Director.
- Complies with all Policies and Procedures of the University of Miami.
- Adheres to all safety and environmental regulations.
- Collaborates with and assists in the training of Jerry Herman Ring Theatre student employees. Requests training as needed in the areas of responsibility.
- Keeps to schedule and aids in the development of efficient planning.
- Assures safety of materials and tools supplied.
- Plans, lays out, and performs work and special projects.
- Reads and works from drawings, prints, sketches, and diagrams.
- Areas in which skilled work may be required include but are not limited to: wood construction, steel construction, scenic painting, theatrical rigging, theatrical lighting, live sound reinforcement, foam carving.
Reporting Relationship
Reports to the Jerry Herman Ring Theatre Technical Director.
