Job Description:

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a National Historic Landmark and accredited museum in Miami, Florida ( The Director of Art & Artifacts Stewardship oversees the physical and intellectual management of the objects and archival collections; curatorial functions; the care and conservation of the collections; and the financial management of the department, including budget, grants and donations. The objects collection consists of over 3,500 art objects, personal objects, and architectural elements, in storage and on exhibit; the archival collections include approximately 3,000 architectural drawings, 3,000 historic photographic prints, and estate records that include 24,000 pieces of correspondence and financial records. The position is on the Engagement and Cultural Resources Team, reports to the Chief Engagement Officer, and supervises the Archives & Digital Collections Manager, Collections Manager, Conservator and Curator.

Essential Functions
  • Provide vision and strategic direction for research, collections management and curatorial initiatives.
  • Broaden Vizcaya’s audiences through the Contemporary Arts Program, virtual and onsite exhibitions, publications and special projects.
  • Conduct and supervise historical and collections research. Foster a network of historians, artists and cultural experts to support research, exhibitions and publications.
  • Collaborate with Vizcaya’s Facilities Department on major infrastructural initiatives throughout the estate to safeguard collections.
  • Manage Conservator to establish and short- and long-term conservation priorities, conduct preventative and reactive condition assessments, and oversee the care and maintenance of historic structure interiors.
  • Serve as Chief Administrator for collections management, including: collections management database; functions related to offsite storage; research and evaluation pertaining to insurance, acquisition, accession and deaccession; security and protection for decorated spaces, and collections on display and in storage. Oversee collections inventory and asset management for Miami-Dade County’s Internal Services Department.
  • Develop, propose and implement policies concerning the management of Vizcaya’s object and archival resources.
General Responsibilities of All Department Directors
  • Lead your department to achieve meaningful and timely actions that advance Vizcaya’s mission, vision and strategic plan, strengthening baseline activities while looking ahead to the revitalization of the Vizcaya Village and other growth opportunities.
  • Bolster Vizcaya’s financial strength by supporting efforts to sustain and grow revenues and by playing an active role in pursuing funding opportunities.
  • Proactively promote communication, collaboration and customer service.
  • Engage in and promote internal committee participation in your department.
  • Recommend hiring, discipline and promotion of staff; review and approve payroll, leave and overtime; set annual employee goals and evaluate performance.
  • Create and manage your department’s budget; ensure your department understands and complies with Vizcaya’s policies and procedures; review staff’s work for accuracy and appropriateness.

Job Requirements:

Position Requirements
  • At least 7 years of experience as a curator, collections manager or related position in a museum, including at least 5 years of supervisory experience.
  • Master’s degree in art history, museum studies or a related field.
  • Deep and current knowledge of research, curatorial, interpretation, collections management and conservation theories and practices.
  • Demonstrated leadership, teambuilding, communications, project management and financial management skills.
  • Commitment to collaboration, customer service, excellence, strategy and innovation.
  • English fluency.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens offers competitive compensation with generous paid leave, retirement benefits, and robust medical and other insurance for full-time employees. Salary will be based on the selected candidate’s experience and skills. The anticipated compensation is approximately $110,000 for someone meeting the requirements of the position to approximately $125,000 for someone exceeding them.
Work Environment/Physical Demands
The majority of work is done in an office setting, with some portion involving interaction with the public, donors, contractors and other constituents on and off site. The position regularly involves walking, including climbing stairs, in the museum galleries and the gardens, and includes trips to offsite storage facilities, which may include climbing ladders and some lifting. Vizcaya is a non-smoking environment.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work/Schedule
This is a full-time (40 hours per week), exempt position. Periodic evening and weekend work is required.
