Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a National Historic Landmark and accredited museum in Miami, Florida (www.vizcaya.org). The Director of Community Partnerships, Programs & Interpretation sustains Vizcaya’s social impact through a broad network of community partnerships, timely and responsive public engagement, accountable learning programs and dynamic, inclusive interpretation. The position is on the Engagement and Cultural Resources Team, reports to the Chief Engagement Officer, and supervises the Adult Learning & Engagement Manager, Community Programs Manager, Cordeiro Volunteer Activities Fellow, Learning Programs Assistant and School Programs Manager.
 
Vizcaya is owned by Miami-Dade County and is operated by the non-profit Vizcaya Museum and Gardens Trust, Inc. Essential Functions
  • Initiate, manage and sustain community partnerships, programs and interpretation to achieve Vizcaya’s social impact. Broaden and diversity Vizcaya’s local reach and audience, increase and deepen community partnerships and demonstrate Vizcaya’s relevancy in the community.
  • Seek and integrate community and stakeholder input into engagement strategies; ensure that program presenters and content providers represent our community.
  • Oversee staff efforts to develop an increasingly robust roster of programs for members of our community, and K-12 and university-level students.
  • Serve as Vizcaya’s Director of Interpretation. Manage Vizcaya’s institutional Interpretive Plan. Develop and support interpretive work plans for museum projects. Edit and review analogue and digital content to be accessible, inclusive and engaging for a diverse audience.
  • Develop, manage and implement an annual plan for visitor studies and research (formal and informal) to track audiences, outcomes, impact, change and performance (onsite and online).
  • Manage the department budget (including expenditures, earned revenues and inventories) and track expenditures of restricted and unrestricted funds.
  • Manage the Volunteer Activities Fellow to build infrastructure and partnerships to support and launch inclusive volunteer, internship and civic engagement opportunities throughout Vizcaya.
  • Develop and implement engagement resources to achieve improved visitor accessibility.
  • Identify market information, benchmarks and trends to support business planning for engagement activities. Identify and pilot new opportunities for earned revenue via engagement experiences.
  • Collaborate with Vizcaya’s Advancement Team on departmental fundraising initiatives, including grants and gifts.
 
General Responsibilities of All Department Directors
  • Lead your department to achieve meaningful and timely actions that advance Vizcaya’s mission, vision and strategic plan, strengthening baseline activities while looking ahead to the revitalization of the Vizcaya Village and other growth opportunities.
  • Bolster Vizcaya’s financial strength by supporting efforts to sustain and grow revenues and by playing an active role in pursuing funding opportunities.
  • Proactively promote communication, collaboration and customer service.
  • Engage in and promote internal committee participation in your department.
  • Recommend hiring, discipline and promotion of staff; review and approve payroll, leave and overtime; set annual employee goals and evaluate performance.
  • Create and manage your department’s budget; ensure your department understands and complies with Vizcaya’s policies and procedures; review staff’s work for accuracy and appropriateness.

Job Requirements:

Position Requirements
  • At least 7 years of engagement work experience in a museum, public garden or related cultural organization, including at least 5 years of supervisory experience.
  • Master’s degree or post-graduate certificate in museum education, museum studies, humanities or a related field.
  • Deep and current knowledge of interpretation in museums, formal and informal learning, engagement, evaluation and assessment theories and practices.
  • Demonstrated leadership, teambuilding, communications, project management and financial management skills.
  • Commitment to collaboration, customer service, excellence, strategy and innovation.
  • English fluency.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

  • Experience with Constituent Record Management systems, ticketing and scheduling systems.
  • Professional research, publications and presentations.

Compensation
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens offers competitive compensation with generous paid leave, retirement benefits, and robust medical and other insurance for full-time employees. Salary will be based on the selected candidate’s experience and skills. The anticipated compensation is approximately $97,000 for someone meeting the requirements of the position to approximately $108,000 for someone exceeding them.
Work Environment/Physical Demands
The majority of work is done in an office setting, with some portion involving interaction with the public, community members, partner organizations, donors and other constituents on and off site. Vizcaya is a non-smoking environment.
 
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work/Schedule
This is a full-time (40 hours per week), exempt position. Periodic evening and weekend work is required.
