Job Description:

SUMMARY:  The Senior Vice President of External Affairs and Strategic Partnerships will provide strategic leadership for the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science in philanthropic support, community engagement, government relations, and external communications. The SVP will work to create a comprehensive advancement strategy for all constituents that unifies the messaging around the museum’s mission and that provides a clear and compelling case for support. The position will develop and execute the strategy for major gifts and work with the Board, President, VP of Advancement, VP of Marketing and other senior leadership, to achieve the annual goals. The SVP co-manages Board development with the CEO and lends professional advice and support to the senior management team on solutions to fund and sustain exhibits, operations, programs and new strategic partnerships to expand the Frost Science mission.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Planning and Strategy

  • Advance the mission, vision, short- and long-term goals of the Museum in concert with the President and senior administrative colleagues;
  • Develop a comprehensive external communication strategy for museum constituents including donors, members, governments, foundations, corporations and academic institutions;
  • Lead the institution’s annual and multi-year strategic planning;
  • Develop new, thoughtful, institutional partnerships to further enhance the Frost Science mission;
  • Cultivate relationships with corporations, cultural institutions, foundations, colleges/universities, school districts, and community partners to promote collaboration, engagement and resources to enhance the growth of Frost Science;
  • Establish positive personal and institutional relationships with local elected representative/administrators at the local, county, state, and federal governmental level;
  • Provide ongoing leadership and development of the Museum’s educational mission through a strong understanding of effective approaches in STEM education and learning;

Advancement

  • Oversee the Advancement team and lead the planning of fundraising strategies which utilize best practices in annual, major, and planned gift programs;
  • Ensure the implementation of successful individual giving and annual giving programs;
  • Oversee development of, and maintain relationships with, current and prospective donors;
  • Develop and lead innovative and ongoing advancement initiatives and community partnerships with foundations, city and county government, and community-based organizations;
  • Maintain a full understanding of the Museum’s programs and exhibits in order to communicate effectively to donors their impact and significance;
  • Work closely with the Marketing team to support design and delivery of cost-effective special events for the Museum including the annual gala.

Job Requirements:

Administration

  • Represent Frost Science externally, on a local and national level, and represent and speak for the institution with key external stakeholders in the absence of the CEO;
  • Work closely with the senior management team to align grant proposals initiated by other departments with the Museum’s strategic and financial goals;
  • Hire, train, inspire and guide direct reports and the entire Advancement team toward accountable, goal-oriented outcomes;
  • Serve as the staff liaison for Institutional Advancement to the Board of Trustees and any future Board Committee on Advancement and Strategy;
  • Attend Museum receptions and events outside of business hours, when necessary;

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A minimum of 15 years of professional experience in advancement and external affairs, particularly as they pertain to cultural institutions, science communication, technology, and/or education and a demonstrated ability in organizational planning and strategy development;
  • Experience in legislative or governmental affairs at the federal, state or local levels;
  • Strong organizational, supervisory, and leadership capabilities are required;
  • Bachelor’s degree is required and master’s degree is preferred;
  • Proven achievement and ability in the areas of advancement, communications, grants, corporate and foundation relations and government relations;
  • Successful track record of fundraising and donor cultivation;
  • Strong interpersonal and motivational skills, including ease and skill in conveying the mission of the organization to a wide variety of constituencies.
  • Excellent communication skills, both interpersonally and in writing with extensive media experience;
  • Demonstrate a high level of organizational skills, self-motivation, written and verbal communication, effectively sharing information across and between multiple disciplines and reaching audiences with varied technical and organizational knowledge;

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Work is normally performed in an interior office environment, using light physical effort, with little or no exposure to physical risk. Irregular hours, travel and attendance at evening and weekend events is expected.
