Job Description:

The Development Events Intern will provide administrative and logistical support to the two-member Development events team. The Intern will become part of NWS’s 19-member Institutional Advancement team which raises approximately 60% of the organization’s annual budget of $17M. The development events team produces upwards of 100 “friend-raising”, fundraising, cultivation, and stewardship events in a season. The Development Events Intern will take on significant responsibility in planning and executing these events. The position is an excellent opportunity for someone eager to learn about the inner workings of a strong development team, including experience in donor recognition and stewardship, with an emphasis on event planning and management.  
 

Reporting relationships:

  • Reports to Senior Director of Special Events
  • Supports the Development Events Manager
  • Regular interaction with the entire Institutional Advancement Department

Ideal candidates will:

  • Be a current student enrolled in accredited degree program or recent graduate (less than 12 months since graduating)
  • Have experience planning and executing events
  • Have an interest in development activities, or desire to pursue a career in the non-profit sector
  • Commit to being part of an active team, jumping in to help wherever needed
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to effectively interact with a wide variety of individuals, ranging from patrons to vendors and sponsors, etc.
  • Be well-organized and able to manage details efficiently and the ability to work both independently and with supervision
  • Work effectively in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Be proficient in MS Office
  • Be available some nights and weekends during the high-season
  • Have a background or interest in classical music (a plus)
  • Must be able to work with people of all cultures and backgrounds

Educational Objectives:

  • Gain professional fundraising experience
  • Participate in donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship processes
  • Strengthen understanding of successful methods for fundraising from events, individuals, corporations, and foundations
  • Become familiar with non-profit practices
  • Gain skills related to the Tessitura CRM database
  • Improve written and oral communication skills 

Hours and compensation:

NWS will work with interns to create a schedule that fits the needs of both the individual and the department. The intern will be compensated at the current minimum wage. Candidates for this internship should be able to fulfill at least three-days a week (minimum of 4 hours per day) along with some nights and weekends. (Average time commitment cannot exceed 29 hours per week)

Duration of position: 

  • Fall internship: September 2019 – December 2019

Start and end dates negotiable based on school schedules and department needs.
