Job Description:

The Arsht Center Technical Theater Apprenticeship Program is designed to introduce residents of Miami-Dade County ages 18-24 from diverse backgrounds and underrepresented communities to a professional career in technical theater. This apprenticeship is a paid, three-year program, running annually from October to July.

Apprentices will work daily on projects related to Arsht Center performances and events, under the supervision of industry professionals. Once an appropriate level of training has been completed, apprentices will join the performance running crews alongside International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) stagehands, exposing the apprentices to local and international artists, technicians and companies. In addition to technical training, apprentices will attend “Life Skills” workshops focusing on financial literacy, health, resume building and more.

Production hours are long, varied and will include evenings, weekends and holidays. Apprentices will be selected through an interview process and will receive a stipend during the first two years, joining the paid union workforce in the third year.

1st Year
The first year of training starts in the Carnival Studio Theater. There, the apprentices will be supervised by an Arsht Center Technical Director and will attend mandatory technician – led classes in technical theater. The apprentices will work alongside IATSE stagehands in the areas of lighting, audio, carpentry, video, and rigging. The objective of this first year is to create a solid foundation in technical theater.

2nd Year
During the second year, the apprentices will advance to the Knight Concert Hall and Ziff Ballet Opera House, where a large portion of their instruction will come from the Arsht Center’s IATSE Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) certified Head Technicians. The apprentices will work on national Broadway tours, Operas, Music and Dance concerts. During this year, they will be given the opportunity to focus on a specific area of technical theater. The Center will assist the apprentices in determining a course of action, whether it means joining the work force or pursuing a college degree.

3rd Year
In the third and final year, while still being under the mentorship and guidance of the Adrienne Arsht Center, apprentices will join IATSE Local 500’s call list and will start taking work calls throughout Miami-Dade County including the Arsht Center.
