Company Description:

ABOUT: Bakehouse Art Complex envisions a world that supports and values artists and recognizes their ability to shape, reflect, and transform our world. Its mission is to address the need for affordable live, live-work, and workspaces for artists in Miami’s urban core. We are a 501(c)(3)  not-for-profit institution.

Founded in 1985 by artists and for artists in a former industrial Art Deco-era bakery, Bakehouse provides studio residencies, infrastructure, and community to enable the highest level of artistic creativity, development, and collaboration for the most promising talent.

As home to more than 100 working artists, Bakehouse builds community, facilitates creative exchange, and provides the opportunity for artists to collaborate with, learn from, inspire, and encourage each other. It is one of the oldest artist-serving organizations in Miami, with studios of varying sizes, two galleries, a classroom, print room, photography lab, ceramics facilities, and woodworking, and welding areas. These spaces, unavailable outside of university campuses, enable artists to work, make, discover, learn, and share their practices and work with each other and the broader community.

The organization is now positioned for its next stage of development to play a more critical role in the collective efforts to build a strong and sustainable ecosystem in Miami in which artists and the arts can thrive. Recently, the City of Miami approved the Wynwood Norte Neighborhood Revitalization District (NRD-2), which provides Bakehouse with the opportunity to add affordable housing for artists and others to its 2.3-acre campus. The NRD-2 was the result of a participatory community visioning plan, of which Bakehouse played a major role.

With a future redevelopment project in the plans, including the renovation of the former bakery building, Bakehouse is committed to investing in and growing transformational relationships with a community of multicultural, multigenerational, and multidisciplinary artists  whose practices can inform, engage, and change our community. As a cultural anchor rooted in place, we aim to connect to and be a neighborhood resource and reflect the diversity of Wynwood Norte and the city of Miami as a whole.

We are committed to cultivating an environment that is inclusive of all, regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, disability, age, sexual orientation, or gender.
